The sauna ritual: halfway between wellness and tradition

Cherished for their profound effects on both body and mind, saunas have been an integral part of various cultures for centuries. Today, they continue to grow in popularity, valued for their numerous wellness benefits. At Hotel Caesius Thermae & SPA Resort, guests can explore a diverse selection of saunas, each designed to provide unique therapeutic experiences.

So, before you step into this world of pure bliss, let’s discover the different types of saunas awaiting you by the shores of Lake Garda.

A quick guide to the main sauna types

  • The Finnish sauna is the most popular type, with temperatures ranging from 90°C to 100°C and low humidity levels of 20-30%. This intense heat is ideal for purifying the skin, improving blood circulation and reducing stress.
  • The Roman dry sweating room, or Laconicum, is a gentler alternative to the Finnish sauna. It features moderate temperatures sitting around 55°C to 65°C and low humidity, encouraging an intensive yet pleasant perspiration process.
  • With 40-50°C temperatures and higher humidity levels of 50-60%, the Mediterranean sauna (or bio sauna) offers a relaxing and rejuvenating sensory experience, further enhanced by aromatic scents.
  • The Turkish steam bath, or Caldarium, is a steam-infused sanctuary where temperatures range between 40°C and 50°C with 100% humidity. Here, warmth and steam work together to boost circulation, promote perspiration, and open the pores, while natural aromas enhance relaxation and well-being.

Top tips for choosing the best sauna

Choosing the right sauna depends on your individual needs and preferences. If you are looking for an energising and stimulating experience, the Finnish sauna is probably the best option. If you prefer a gentler warmth, the Laconicum offers moderate temperatures and is particularly beneficial after physical activity or a long day at work. For a relaxing, sensory experience, the Mediterranean sauna is the ideal choice, enveloping you in a soothing atmosphere. Alternatively, the steam bath provides exceptional rejuvenating benefits for both body and mind.

To make the most of your sauna session, we recommend starting with the steam bath to optimally prepare the skin for the detoxifying effects of heat. If you are new to saunas, don’t hesitate to ask the staff for guidance – they will gladly assist you in choosing the best experience according to your needs.

The importance of using the sauna correctly

To fully enjoy the benefits of a sauna, it is essential to use it correctly. Before entering, start with a hot shower to cleanse the skin and prepare your body for the heat. Once inside, it is recommended to stay for about 15-20 minutes, allowing the warmth to work its magic before stepping out for a cold shower to refresh and invigorate the body. For maximum benefits, alternating between hot and cold temperatures through thermal shock is highly effective. So, don’t be afraid and enjoy the cold tub, the experience showers, the Kneipp path, or the ice fountain!

After your sauna session, hydration is key. Be sure to drink plenty of water to replenish lost fluids and support the detoxification process. Lastly, take at least 10 minutes to rest and unwind, allowing your body to fully absorb the therapeutic effects of your wellness experience.
